Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
